The Fort Lee Public School System was enacted in 1850. During this time children in Fort Lee were attending school in Edgewater, the community just to the east. According to records this was school #2 located on River Road.

Th first school built in Fort Lee was Public School # 1. This school was built in 1875 and contained two rooms. The total cost was $2,100. The land the school was built on was property on Whiteman Street, which was donated to the residents by Mr. & Mrs. Hoym, Mr. & Mrs. Guntzer and Mr. & Mrs. Eicke. As population increased so did the size of the school.

In 1916 Fort Lee High School opened its doors at the same site. Thirty-nine students attended that year. On May 10, 1927 the land where the present High School stands, was purchased. The High School was eventually constructed.

In 1896 School #3 was built. This school serves the north end of town. Located off of Myrtle Avenue in the Coytesville section.

In 1910 School #4 was completed. This school is located in the south end of town in the Palisade section on Anderson Avenue.

In 1869 the first Catholic School in Bergen County was built in Fort Lee. Madonna Parochial School initially was located on Lemoine Avenue. The school was later moved Whiteman Street. The name of the school changed to Christ the Teacher.

The other catholic school, The Academy of the Holy Angels, was
founded in 1879 by the Sisters of Notre Dame and is no longer with us. Mediterranean Towers now stand in its place.

In the 1960's a need for an intermediate school was needed. This school would take the load off the other public schools. This school later changed its name to Lewis F. Cole Middle School. Mr. Cole was a former superintendent of the Fort Lee school system. The Lewis F. Cole Middle School is located on Stillwell Avenue. Children in grades 7 and 8 attend the school.
